Dad died on Friday after a battle with bowel/colon cancer. He was in the hospice and unfortunately we only got 15mins notice to get there fast before he died. None of the family managed to get there in that time as we all lived too far (im an hour away) All the family had been to see him recently but it isnt' the same as being there at the end. I feel bad about that. He was very confused in his last week which was very sad to see although sometimes he said some amusing things too!
Mum is in pieces, they have been together for almost 60 years and she is disabled and he was her main carer. My brother is brilliant and is helping Mum alot. It's a good thing that he lives only 10mins away. Ifeel so sad for her especially with it happening at this time of the year. Ive asked her to stay with us for Christmas but she doesn't want to.
I wish you all a very Happy Christmas.
Love Shirley x

Hello Shirley,
So sorry to hear of your very sad news. My thoughts are with you, especially at this time of year. It is hard when a parent dies and the pain really never goes away. Please do not beat yourself up by not being there when he died. Sometimes it is what is meant to be. We were with my mum in law for 36 hrs solidly , when home for 1 half hours to shower etc. and she died. It was just as if she did not want to pass away in front of us.
I hope you have good support from your Family and that they are there for you. Regards to your poor Mother as well.
Look forward to the New Year but have as good a Christmas as possible.
Rose x

So very sorry to hear your sad news, Shirley, and I understand how your poor mum must be feeling. It`s especially hard at this time of year, for all concerned. My sister and I sat with my mam for hours, but she died while my sister had gone out to make a phone call - just meant to be. Do take care - you`ll be in our thoughts. Kathleen x

Sheila I'm so sorry to read this. We were too late to be with our Dad too when he died. I still wish I could have bee there with him at the end but sometimes it's just not meant to be. The time of year sometimes makes it seem even worse if that's possible. Love to you and yours. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Shirley
I am so sorry you have lost your dad. I know how you must feel. I was devastated when my dad died and it is a very, very difficult time for you all. As for not being there when he died, there is a lot in what Rose and Kathleen say about people not wanting their loved ones to be there. This happens a lot. I could tell you of many instances like this so you must console yourself with the fact that your dad loved you so much he didn't want to make it worse for you by being there. I will keep you and your mum in my prayers Shirley

Hi Shirley,
Heartfelt sympathy from me at losing your dad, I know how hard this is having lost my dad in February. I too am struggling at the prospect of Xmas without him. It was meant to be he died before you got there. We were with my dad the whole time, I knew on the Thursday he didn't have long, we sat with him for a time in the evening, I told him to let go if he had had enough, that I would deal with everything and make him proud, he then said go to bed and have a Good Sleep. We had been up from 5am each day until late. This was his wish, I had checked on him again around 2am asking if he was ok, he smiled and put his thumb up. We awoke at 9.30am when my youngest daughter called. I went in to check on dad then and he had passed away in his sleep. I think he knew too and wanted to go on his own. We did everything we could for him as I am sure you have also done, so try not to be sad you were not there, it was his time and he knew he was loved.
I will keep you in my thoughts Shirley over this sad time, look after your mum and get as much support as you can for her.
Lorna xx

Hi Shirley , sorry to hear of this ..i lost my Mum 2 years ago at this time , and even though it was expected it was still a shock when it happened . We took comfort in the fact she was no longer in pain . Hugs , and my thoughts go out to you Rich X "The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

Thank you all so much for your kind words and support.
The funeral is now arranged for Dec 30th which is quicker than i expected with Christmas in the way but i'm glad we will be able to lay him to rest.
